The only thing I have been able to do productively this past week is to shop online for Christmas gifts, so I thought I’d make myself useful.
Here are some of my favourite locally sourced gift ideas that you can buy within our own community of amazing Inner West businesses (there really is no need to shop outside of our hood)…
For the foodie
Who doesn’t love a curated bunch of goods from Continental Deli? Cocktails in a can Mar-tinnys , Can-Hattan’s, the most mouthwatering salted caramel (I’ve been known not to share), or even a gift card to eat in.
Cornersmith also has amazing hampers of goodness to fill your favourite person’s pantry with goodies like Green Tomato Relish, Bread and Butter Pickles, Blood Orange Marmalade and more. You can order your Christmas Hampers now.
Or, for that true Christmas spirit grab some of the most amazing Christmas pies from local artisan pie maker Core Catering.
For the creative
Send them to one of the most social and creative workshops in the Inner West with Karen and Pepa from Shibori in Stanmore. Not only will they get to mix with other locals, they’ll learn the art of Shibori and likely go home and re-vamp every bit of clothing or furniture in their home.
For the art lover
Think of every one of your favourite buildings in the Inner West and it’s likely Jacquie Duncan of Little City Pics has drawn it. Jacqui is a local graphic designer and illustrator and has an online shop with the most unique prints of our favourite local buildings.
For the beer lover
Bucket Boys Beer has an “All the Hops in the World” – 12 cans of “hoppy fresh beer” and a bucket boys glass. We also love their Christmas Can Gift Vouchers – inside each can is a gift card. Check out their website for the full range.
For the candle sniffer
We all know one (I’m one) and I just bought myself a Hunter Candle’s Christmas special with the aromatic scents of nutmeg, cinnamon and smoke. Or for the gift that keeps on giving, purchase their Candle a Month package and they’ll surprise your loved one with a new scent each month. Candles are hand-poured in Newtown.
For the floral enthusiast
A bunch of flowers is for any time of year if you ask me, but for Christmas, I’m completely obsessed with these gorgeous flower wreaths from The Floral Decorator in Erskineville.
For the person with totes everything
We recently shared with you Gwen Blake, creator of Sans Sheriff, latest tote release and her bags – of which she’s got a few new fabulous ones including “The Man bag” are really a perfect gift for that person with everything. Or curate your own Inner West hamper and fill a tote with all your other Inner West favourite pieces.
For the sun lover
Did you know we have one of Australia’s most renowned milliners right here on our own doorstep? Rosie Boylan, of Newtown fame, has accolades throughout the media world, some of her hats you’ll see on characters in films including The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge and in major bespoke stage productions and Australian TV series (and this is just the start of it).
Select a hat from Rosie’s ready to wear designs or book your loved one in to create something truly special with a bespoke commission consultation.
My goal for next year is to get strong! So I’ve asked Blake for a membership to the newly opened Perform Pilates, based in Stanmore. They are a reformer pilates specialist with a focus on wellbeing (and we all need a good dose of that). I’m hearing great things from the other locals who have already joined the newest Stanmore pilates cult 🙂
And finally; there really is nothing nicer than receiving a beautifully crafted and unique letterpress card. Bernadine Brewer, Camperdown local and creator of Lovely Paper Au has curated a range of luxury letterpress Christmas cards and gift tags printed by hand on antique presses.
Now that you have your Christmas shopping sorted, and you’ve supported a local Inner Westie in the process, we wish for you the happiest and safest Christmas and New Year.
