Saying goodbye to The Camperdown home of April77

Saying goodbye to your first family home is full of emotion. The photo above, by local Inner West photographer Cole Bennetts, marks the occasion for the Funnell family.

One of my favourite things about being a Real Estate Agent is seeing the connection people have with their home and getting to be part of a pretty big moment in their life.

Ben and Nerrida are a super cool creative couple from Camperdown who I sold 77 Kingston Road for in Camperdown late last year. They are also the owners and creatives behind local Agency, April 77 – one of their recent pieces of work is the re-design of this website for Annika and I which we love.

This is Ben and Nerrida’s story of life in and around 77 Kingston Road, Camperdown:

Tell us about 77 Kingston Road:

77 Kingston Road was the first home we bought after years of renting. We purchased it in 2011 and at the time it felt like huge money, but we’d spent many years saving and were definitely ready to have our own place. We fell in love with this home because of its proximity to the Inner West’s best nightlife, food and culture. It’s also walking distance to our office and daughter’s school. The home had great karma for us. Both Ben and I were born in April 1977 and our business name is April77 Creative, so number 77 Kingston Road felt like it was meant to be!

77 Kingston Road is at what I call the epicentre of some of the Inner West’s best lifestyle hubs, what did such a great location mean to you?

We could literally walk in any direction and find ourselves in amongst it in a matter of minutes. From the nightlife at Enmore Road, the parks of Camperdown or we could jump on a train at Stanmore station.

Our business is located at The Flourmill in Newtown, which is less than a 5 minute walk from home. One of the most important things for us being a working couple with a young family was having a short commute to and from work to give us that work life balance.

What were some of your favourite local places to visit?

Aside from visiting friends who live in the area, we frequented the many great places to eat and drink on King Street and Enmore Road. Some family favourites are Wishbone, Flying Tong, Clem’s, Mary’s and Ole Burgers (major fried chicken theme here). The kids love Cow and Moon for gelato and it was also Ben’s main coffee spot. For date night, cocktails and delicious food from Queen Chow was our go to. There were many great live shows experienced at the Enmore Theatre as well. We also spent heaps of time at Camperdown Park, doing Bootcamp with The Outdoor Squad or shooting hoops.

Your home was full of really interesting art and I understand some of it is by local artists, can you tell us more about these?

We have a large art collection featuring pieces by a number of local and international artists including Dave Kinsey, Audrey Kawaski, Meggs, Rone, WBYK, Sally Browne, Handiedan and many more. When we moved into the house we commissioned local artist Daniel O’toole  to paint a large artwork to sit above our couch in the upstairs living room. We also own a large piece by renowned Sydney based photographer and close personal friend Toby Dixon.

You also run a local design agency called April77 Creative, can you tell us more about this?

April77 Creative offers design solutions across a range of disciplines including brand and logo development, mobile responsive websites, corporate publications and typesetting through to custom illustration, album covers and packaging design.

We’re probably best known for our work for high profile music artists such as Hilltop Hoods, Thundamentals and Briggs, however our client list is extremely diverse and encompasses multiple sectors including Arts & Entertainment, Corporate Finance & Government, Food & Hospitality, Fashion & Beauty and Not-For-Profit. A couple of our favourite local projects include The Vanguard rebrand and Field Blend Wine & Cheese Store’s branding. You can check out more of our work out here

What were the emotions you had when you sold your home?

It was a very difficult choice to sell as we feel so connected to the local community and the house. Selling (and moving) was bittersweet, but ultimately we know it was the best choice for our family and we’re excited about our future plans. Luckily we had one of the best in the biz to help us with the sale!

We found Blake’s professionalism and market knowledge to be extremely helpful in guiding us through this huge decision in our lives. He was always fast to respond to our queries, and also happy provide an honest and genuine opinion at each stage of the process. This made us feel very confident and comfortable with our choice of agent – and this was further reflected in the final outcome which exceeded our expectations.

What are some of your favourite memories of 77 Kingston Road?

Being our first home, 77 Kingston Road will always hold many precious memories for our family. From our eldest’s first day at Newtown Public, to bringing home our second daughter who was born just up the road at RPA, too many boozy house parties to remember and games with the kids in the back lane.

Ben and Nerrida sold their Camperdown home through me in October 2019. We’ve since become clients of April77 Creative ourselves and they were the perfect agency to re-design our My Inner West Address website into what it is today.
